Calling All Artists! DTC to Choose Local Talent for Public Art Piece in Urban Garden
Tempe, AZ – The Downtown Tempe Community (DTC) is launching the Downtown Tempe Urban Garden Mural Project for installation on the east side wall of the City Hall Parking Garage on 5th Street & Forest. For this project, one or multiple local professional artists will be selected to contribute individual sections of the wall, sections sizes to be determined but could easily reach sizes of 25’ x 25’. If multiple Artists are used, they will be expected to work collaboratively with their peers adjacent to them on the wall as they create their designs, to ensure fluid transitions from one artist to the next. Artists will need to supply their own materials as needed. Stipend for each artist is $500, which will offset the cost of materials needed for the project.
Artists can apply by going to the Urban Garden website, www.tempeurbangarden.com, and downloading the application. The deadline for all applicants is April 30. Artist applications will be reviewed and chosen by a committee consisting of DTC representatives and various members of the local artist community.
The Urban Garden continues the “Locavore Movement”, which is a collaborative effort to build more locally based, self-reliant food economies - one in which sustainable food production, processing, distribution, and consumption is integrated to enhance the economic, environmental and social health of a particular place and is considered to be a part of the broader sustainability movement. This garden will play on this to bring communities together to benefit from eating fresh, locally grown food, which is not only healthier and environmentally-conscious, but tastes better too!
Downtown Tempe Community, Inc. is the private, non-profit organization that manages the Mill Avenue District and is responsible for the vibrancy and excellence of the cultural, lifestyle, and commerce experience in the District. Mill Avenue District, Inc. works in partnership with the City of Tempe to increase the value of downtown Tempe through enhanced management and promotional services on behalf of Mill Avenue District members and other downtown stakeholders.
