Mayor’s Run Gathers 300 to Raise Money for Tempe Charities

More than a dozen charities will benefit from the sweat of Tempe Mayor Hugh Hallman and his team of 300 runners.


The Fourth Annual Mayor’s Run happens in conjunction with the PF Chang’s Rock n Roll Marathon on January 16. In During the three years, he and the 300 Mayor’s Runners have raised $574,000 for a variety of local charities and school programs.

Hallman, now 49, runs a pretty quick race – just shy of two hours in his last half marathon.

“My feet hurt a bit. I’ve now run 10 half marathons for the Mayor’s Run or to train for it — I’d never run
more than a mile in my life before I started this in late 2005, and that last time I had done that was in
1977,” said Hallman. “The results have been great for the charities and a bunch of people who never had
tried something like running a half marathon or marathon before.”

P.F. Chang’s Rock n Roll Arizona Marathon and Half Marathon happens Jan. 16 It starts in downtown
Phoenix and ends in downtown Tempe at Sun Devil Stadium. More than 35,000 people participate, making it one of Tempe’s top destination events.

This year’s Mayor’s Run includes 13 local non-profits that have been recruiting participants to run or walk the PF Chang’s Marathon and Half Marathon.

  •  Friends of the Library
  • Friends of the Tempe Center for the Arts
  • Tempe Centers for Habilitation
  • Tempe Community Action Agency
  • Tempe Community Foundation
  • Tempe Family YMCA
  • Tempe Preparatory Academy
  • Tumbleweed

To prepare for the race, Hallman and the Mayor’s Runners, gather for practice sessions led by local running coaches. The entire program is paid for
through sponsorships and all profits go straight to the local charities. The 2011 sponsors include: Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Arizona, Tempe Marketplace,
Tempe Gateway, Veolia Transportation, PMT Ambulance, Arizona Republic, Brooks, and Dave and Busters. Mood Swings Salon also donated prizes for
runners.
